Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What is the Middlebury Equestrian Team?
For the last 28 years, the Middlebury College Equestrian Team has been a cornerstone club sport at the college. The team rides under the instruction of Kate Selby and Margaret Bojanowski at Eddy Farm. Though only a club sport, the team competes in hunt seat equitation against other club sport and varsity teams in New England through the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA). The team fluctuate in size but for the 2022-23 year, we have 25 competing members.
How is the show going to work?
Collegiate equestrian shows have an incredibly unique format! To compete, each team must have riders from all ability levels ranging from less than 24 hours of mounted instruction to placing top 10 in a national competition such as the Maclay Finals. Each riding level or class competes against other riders of the same ability level. Classes include introductory (walk-trot), pre-novice (beginner walk-trot-canter), novice (advanced walk-trot-canter), limit flat and fences, intermediate flat and fences, and open flat and fences. Teams accumulate points as their riders place in classes. Also unique to IHSA, riders must compete on a random draw horse. The hosting team provides all horses and riders determine their ride by pulling a name out of a bucket. The rider then has to compete on that unfamiliar horse with no warm-up time. This ensures that the competition tests the rider's ability level, rather than letting competitors get complacent with nice horses.
The Middlebury home show will feature teams from University of Vermont, Colby-Sawyer College, Castleton University, Norwich University, Northeastern University, University of Maine, University of New England, University of New Hampshire, Bates College, and Bowdoin College. Jump classes will start at 9:30am, we will have a 30 minute recess around 11:30am as jump classes conclude, and then will proceed with flat classes at noon.
